(WARNING: Spoilers)
Our story begins in a cult village.
Many years ago, as the legend goes, a wolf terrorized the village - attacking homes, eating livestock, and stealing children.
One day, a girl journeys into the forest to sacrifice herself to the wolf in order to protect her family. Her blood puts the wolf into a hibernation-like sleep. The village believes they must sacrifice a girl regularly to keep the wolf asleep.
They continued this ritual into the present day.
On the day they choose the next sacrifice, they read a poem telling the legend and act out the first girl's sacrifice. Each girl of age presents themselves to the town elder and one is chosen.
This year, Rowan is chosen. She says goodbye to her mother and sister, Juniper, then runs away to the graveyard honoring all the past sacrificed girls. Mama Ivy finds her and tells her not to follow the ritual, but instead, give her blood to the forest to resurrect the wolf. At first Rowan is hesitant, but Mama Ivy persists and she is convinced. She escapes to the forest, cuts her palm, and brings the wolf back to life.
The forest comes alive! The animals are returned to roam the forest freely and the wolf reacquaints with them. Rowan tags along and when the wolf notices her, first with fear, then with curiosity, she is welcomed into their group. Each animal performs for her to tell their story.
Back at the village, Juniper is desperate to rescue her sister before it is too late. She rallies the huntresses to go find her. Once they find the wolf is still alive, their plan changes to find and kill the wolf.
A battle commences in the forest. Rowan and Juniper are conflicted about which side is the right one. Rowan tries to convince the cult to leave the animals alone and stop the sacrifices, and to convince the animals to go peacefully back to their homes. Juniper and the wolf come to agree and join forces, but Huntress Pine is too angry to see reason and kills the wolf.
Rowan is furious and attacks Huntress Pine. Another battle commences and there are casualties.
The villagers left alive flee the forest to start a new village away from the forest and cease the sacrificing.
Juniper expects Rowan to return with her, but Rowan chooses to stay in the forest with the animals. They have a heartfelt goodbye then part ways.
Rowan and the animals bring the wolf back to life, not with a sacrifice, but with a united offering of love and understanding.
